I found a KI2 in Lockhart, TX
« on: February 22, 2014, 05:39:34 PM »

I heard of this place Arcades4home.com and they have a store in Lockhart, TX (which is known for famous BBQ).  This arcade is located in their little town square, you pay a flat fee of $6.99 and you play everything for free.  A lot of the games are in poor/fair shape but they are mostly great 90's classics.  I found the KI2 in a KI cabinet, its for sale ($700 i think).  Its a shame, if it was KI i'd seriously consider picking it up.  They had one of my favorites, Hydro Thunder.  I would swear some of the games in there were bought from the massive Mr. Gattis I worked at in high school, I even found the exact carpet from the place used to cover a rough part of wood on a game.  The Hydro Thunders themselves had very similar issues as if they bought the pair.  Some of the other games from the Gattis I worked at just a year ago might have been there.  They recently sold several to make room for newer ones, many looked to be the same ones.  If you're in the area its worth stopping by, I know it will be unlikely anyone here would be near it by chance it's sort of in the middle of nowhere.

It's sad seeing games you really love in bad shape, I'm sure its getting harder to find parts for games that weren't huge or a cult classic.  The poor Hydro Thunder's were working well, but the throttle was loose and the monitors were going bad.  I did manage to grab the #1 time on a track.

That cab is in great shape from what we can see. That would be a nice one to have.

Its in pretty good shape.  Up close you can see some problems with the side art near the back.  I could peak in and see the right side and it looked okay too.  I just don't know if I'd buy it since its KI2 and I know KI boards are hard to come by.  I'd like to have a KI2 but id rather it be the right side art.

that's fair but if they upgraded the KI board to a KI2 board you can always get the chips to turn it back into a KI, that's easier then finding a reasonably priced KI board.

I didn't think of that.  How many chips need to be changed?  I've seen the boot roms on ebay.  I know id have to switch the hard drive or use a compact flash.

Check this:

http://www.arcade-history.com/manuals/1281/Killer%20Instinct%202%20-%20ROM%20KIT%20Manual%20-%20Feb.1996%2016-45064-101%20-%20Midway.pdf

its the ROm kit manual, looks like 9 total ROMS (all of which can be burned) looks like if it were a conversion it would have the add-on board off the hard drive.

OR you can check here:

http://www.thekillerinstinctproject.com/kiproject/kihardware.html

and it has pictures that help you identify which version of the board it is.

Thanks. I guess if I decide to do it ill have to ask if I can see inside first.

I found what looks like a nice KI in Phoenix for $700 but as usual the guy didn't reply to me.  It would be a long drive but I'd consider it if he sent me more detailed pics.

I'm still on the fence about it.  I'm looking around but I'll keep it in mind.  That's cool you live over there, I didn't think anyone on the site would live near it.
