Hey guys! I'm a LONGTIME fan of the first KI arcade (it ate many of my quarters back in '94) and have enjoyed the KIx emulation on my Xbox for a few years.  I've built a few MAME arcades that feature the KIx emulation (it runs 1 and 2 nicely and includes service access, move lists and more) but recently started thinking about KI 3 on the Xbone...

There seems to be a promo cabinet in the wild back when the game was launching but it was very different to a traditional arcade game; flat marquee, goofy speaker grilles, and MadCatz sticks (obviously used for promotional purposes).  So what gives?  Why can't I play KI 3 on an honest to goodness arcade cabinet with built-in buttons, a coin mech, and retro appeal that follows the tradition of 1 and 2?  Well I should just make one then...

For the longest time I've been looking for a KI 1 genuine cabinet in my area but they're getting harder to find.  I'm building 2 LCD friendly MAME cabinet's for my buddy's bar downtown - they borrow the shape of the KI/MK Midway cabinets while being low profile to accommodate the LCD panels.

The KI 3 cabinet could borrow this design but part of me wants to match the cabinets used for 1 and 2.  I JUST found an empty Midway cabinet this morning and if the guy's price is reasonable it might make a perfect KI 3 candidate.  Thoughts?  Should I do low profile or match the KI1/2 cabinets?

TRANSITION;
I do bartop builds occasionally

...and I have 2 unfinished bartop cabinets (slightly larger 2-player versions) that are just sitting around.  Maybe I'll abandon the idea of having a full-sized KI 1 cabinet in lieu of making that KI 3 cab and make one of my bartops a KI 1 mini version?  That could be fun!  Anyway I'll keep you guys posted on the progress going forward.

Welcome! I wish I were talented enough with wood to make one.

Thanks man!

My photoshop skills are so-so but I think I like this concept:

Obviously I didn't touch the control panel since that would be incredibly tedious.  Just trying to get a feel for the overall aesthetic.

i am also a mame cabinet builder an a few years ago i made a ki cab based on mame.
i Like the concept of original cab combined with the new KI.
i have also a question . what interface you want using for the Xbox one ? maybe controller hack ? or what is the best way?

Looks like there are cheap wired Xbox One controllers in the wild.  I'm handy with a padhack so this might be the most affordable option short of finding a compatible control interface.

Hey, anything can be bought for the right price - right? ;)

This project is a few months out but I'm getting pretty excited about it!

I should probably sneak in a "Rareware" logo on the control panel or marquee.  :)

So you guys would be the best ones to ask;  who should I put on the sides of the cabinet?  If I use Sabrewulf I'll do blue buttons and t-moulding but maybe there's a better option.  Sabrewulf is a good choice since he's in all 3 games and has a really distinctive look.  He also promotes the idea that you'll find some unique character designs in the game, which is why I didn't choose Jago.  Jago is cool and all but having a werewolf, a robot, an alien, etc... really sets KI apart from the Mortal Kombats and other fighting series.

Other characters I wanted to try were of course Glacius and Fulgore but I couldn't track down very hi-res images of them like I did with Sabrewulf.

Obviously the next thing to design is the control panel but I need to finalize the side art first.  Still not sure if I should do a 'full sized' midway cabinet with a CRT to match KI 1 & 2 or use my slimline design and put an LCD in it.  Thoughts?

If you have the other 2 in full size then you do a full size, if you don't then do a slim line. My biased opinion says put TJ on the side however that pic of Sabrewulf is actually perfect for side art.

Perhaps. Part of me wants to keep the tradition and do a full sized cabinet but the pragmatic side of me says to do a slim build.  The local guy with the Midway cabinet wants too much money for it I think - $250.  He's modified the base and made it 3" taller (weird. That would have to be undone), and it's missing the coin mech and bezel glass.  It includes a monitor but given the mods and missing parts I didn't want to pay that much for it.  I have the plans and can build an MDF clone for about 1/3 that price.  Decisions decisions....

If season 2 includes KI 2 then yeah, the Xbox One will play all 3 games! If not I can easily integrate one of my modded original XBoxes running KIx emulation for 1 and 2.

EDIT: Hot bread, eh?  Well I'll certainly tackle a prototype and if people want to buy one from me I'd be glad to make more ;)
