Hey guys! I'm a LONGTIME fan of the first KI arcade (it ate many of my quarters back in '94) and have enjoyed the KIx emulation on my Xbox for a few years. I've built a few MAME arcades that feature the KIx emulation (it runs 1 and 2 nicely and includes service access, move lists and more) but recently started thinking about KI 3 on the Xbone...
There seems to be a promo cabinet in the wild back when the game was launching but it was very different to a traditional arcade game; flat marquee, goofy speaker grilles, and MadCatz sticks (obviously used for promotional purposes). So what gives? Why can't I play KI 3 on an honest to goodness arcade cabinet with built-in buttons, a coin mech, and retro appeal that follows the tradition of 1 and 2? Well I should just make one then...
For the longest time I've been looking for a KI 1 genuine cabinet in my area but they're getting harder to find. I'm building 2 LCD friendly MAME cabinet's for my buddy's bar downtown - they borrow the shape of the KI/MK Midway cabinets while being low profile to accommodate the LCD panels.
The KI 3 cabinet could borrow this design but part of me wants to match the cabinets used for 1 and 2. I JUST found an empty Midway cabinet this morning and if the guy's price is reasonable it might make a perfect KI 3 candidate. Thoughts? Should I do low profile or match the KI1/2 cabinets?
I do bartop builds occasionally
...and I have 2 unfinished bartop cabinets (slightly larger 2-player versions) that are just sitting around. Maybe I'll abandon the idea of having a full-sized KI 1 cabinet in lieu of making that KI 3 cab and make one of my bartops a KI 1 mini version? That could be fun! Anyway I'll keep you guys posted on the progress going forward.
